Health coaches are at the forefront of today’s health revolution. At a time when one in five people die of lifestyle-related diseases, as well as when diabetes and obesity are at all-time highs, health coaches provide the nutritional and lifestyle guidance that society desperately needs to find its way back to health.
Health and wellness coaches offer services and fill gaps that doctors, nutritionists and dietitians don’t have the time and/or resources to fill. Health coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments. To put it simply, health coaches are highly educated guides in the fields of nutrition, wellness, bio-individuality and mentoring. Many, like me, also have extensive training and education in various areas that support, or work in conjunction with, their health coaching practice.
Certified health coaches are trained in over 100 dietary theories and lifestyle coaching techniques to help you discover exactly what will bring you success – and what is holding you back. Health coaching focuses on the food you eat as well as your lifestyle, helping you maximize the results of each.
Have you ever been given a list of “eat this, not that?” Have you found that making drastic changes at once is unsustainable and doesn’t work long-term? Perhaps a friend lost a lot of weight on a particular diet, but when you tried it, the results were minimal at best? That’s one area where health coaches come in. We help you implement small changes, little by little, at a pace that’s comfortable for you so that you can achieve all your health goals. We work with you to help you discover your bio-individuality. There issomething that will work for you – the trick is finding it.
Whether your goal is to manage an illness, decrease stress, lose weight, increase energy, or just get healthy, health coaches take the time to listen to your concerns, help you discover where and why you are struggling, and help you navigate the world of contradictory nutritional advice to figure out exactly what works for your body.
Everyone is unique and that is why no onediet works for everyone. Health coaches do not promote one specific type of diet, one specific way of eating, or one specific lifestyle. They help you discover what will work for youspecifically, and how to change your diet and lifestyle to suit your needs and make strides forward.
Doctors and nutritionists are much needed resources for you in terms of health and wellness, however they often simply diagnose and prescribe with little to no time to help you navigate or manage the results. For this reason, many doctors are beginning to partner with health coaches for patients who need to change their behaviors in order to improve their health and manage lifestyle-related illnesses.
Many health coaches work in private practices in one-on-one settings or with small groups of individuals with similar issues. One of the best parts of most health coaching practices is that it can be done via telephone or Skype (or Zoom).
Along with knowing what a health coach is, it is also important to know what a health coach is not. A health coach is not a medical doctor. Health coaches do not diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or recommend lower or higher doses of your current medications. A health coach is also not a personal trainer or physical therapist – trained in proper exercise techniques. It is important to know what credentials your health coach holds.
